Walter Gordey

Captain Walter Gordey:
It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to our treasured father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who passed away at Rosewood Manor in Richmond, after living courageously with Alzheimer’s for many years.
Dad was born in Vegreville, Alberta, and lived on a small homestead with his older brother Peter, younger brother Harry, his father William and mother Pearl. When his mom contracted tuberculosis, the family moved to Vancouver, where he and his brothers signed up to work as deckhands on the tugboats. Although he had only completed Grade Nine, dad was clever and a hard worker. By the age of 24, he had become one of the youngest tugboat captains on the west coast. It was around this time that he met his love, Laura Scott (of Burnaby, B C). They married, and together raised two children, living first in Vancouver, then Richmond. Dad’s extensive west coast towing experience later led to his acceptance as a British Columbia Coast Pilot. He went on to an illustrious 23 year career as a pilot until he retired in 1991. He and our mom travelled often, enjoying their retirement years with friends from Lodge and Grotto.
Dad was an exceptional person. He never lost his positive outlook, but faced hardship with acceptance, resolution and grace. Dad lived a life of integrity and tolerance. He did not judge or criticize others, and was unfailingly kind and courteous to all. He was truly a gentleman.. Dad found laughter often and the sparkle in his eye and sense of fun was something his grandchildren adored. He could fix anything, was always willing to lend a hand, and his work was meticulous. Dad was a wonderful father and grandfather, supportive, patient and encouraging, and a loyal and loving husband..
Dad was an inspiration to us all in the way he lived his life. His beautiful spirit will always be remembered and forever missed. We all feel so fortunate to have had him in our lives. He is survived by his children Steve (Brenda), Garnet (Reid) and grandchildren Andrew (Ayoko), Jennifer (Sean), Cristin (Stew), Taryn, Kelsey, and six great grandchildren. The family will hold a private Remembrance.
The family would like to thank the staff of Rosewood Manor in Richmond for their truly exceptional kindness and care of our dad. They brightened his last days, for which we are so grateful.
