HANNAY, Capt JeffreyDecember 10, 1920 - May 28, 2010Two spirits reunited - Jeff slipped away peacefully to join his beloved Jeannie, and we are left bereft at our loss. Predeceased by his wife Jean, brother-in-law William Hutchings, sister Pat Pyper, and brother Bonar Hannay. Survived by his sister Olive Hutchings, daughters Janice, Rose (Mike), Elaine (Neil), son Jeff Jr., grandchildren Jennifer, Kyle and Monica, nieces, nephews and many friends. Jeff was born in Courtenay, BC to Emma Louise Hood and Geoffrey Hannay, and, along with his family, moved to Victoria in 1926. During the Great Depression, Jeff quit school to help support his family - he sold The Victoria Times on the street corner, set pins in a bowling alley and delivered meat for a local butcher on his bike. He started his life at sea in 1939 as a deckhand with the CPR. On May 20, 1944, he married the love of his life, Jean, and then left to join the Canadian Merchant Navy on the North Atlantic run from Halifax to Liverpool, England. After a trip to Durban, South Africa, in 1946, Jeff left the Merchant Navy and returned home to Jean and the CPR, where he eventually became a Chief Officer. He left the CPR in 1958, and briefly worked as a master on the Pacific Laurel, and then, in 1960, he achieved his dream of becoming a BC Coast Pilot, a career that he enjoyed for 22 years. After retiring, Jeff enjoyed spending more time with Jean, having coffee with the boys, and walking his dogs. Jeff always had time for a chat or to lend an ear and drew people to him with his charming personality and stories of his adventures. He was determined and forthright, with a warm sense of humor and a soft heart, especially for his pets. Special thanks to the staff of Oak Bay Lodge, notably the staff on 3 Dogwood, and the companions of Home Instead. You made his life that much better. Always in our hearts. Until we meet again. Service to be held on June 9, 2010 at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise Drive at 2:00 pm. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
