November 17, 1921 – June 24, 2003
CAIRNS _ Captain Allen N. Cairns passed away peacefully June 24, 2003 at Lions Gate Hospital. Born in Vancouver, November 17, 1921. Al’s career with the marine industry and his love of ships started with the BC Coastal Steamships (CPR) in 1942 where he met a second love, his wife Gladys. Al joined the Royal Canadian Navy from 1959 - 1968. The ensuing years saw Al’s return to CPR and also to Vancouver where he retired as the Marine Superintendent of BC Coastal Steamships 1986. Al was a man of principle, admired and respected by many. Left to mourn are his wife, of 53 years, Gladys, son Bruce (Marie), daughter Laura Cairns-Moffat (Karl) and four grandchildren; Dan, Chelsea, Tyler and Brandi. We will miss him greatly. We’d like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and the whole Palliative Care Team for their care, help and support. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Program of Lions Gate Hospital or to the Mission of Seaman. A Memorial Service celebrating Al’s life will be held at the Vancouver Rowing Club in Stanley Park on Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. HOLLYBURN FUNERAL HOME 604-922-1221
