McANERIN, Captain Herbert (Herb) W. Our beloved Dad and Popper passed away peacefully on October 11, 2010. He lived a full and wonderful life. Herb was born in Victoria on December 4, 1923 to a large family with four sisters (Molly, Joey, Gladys and Ruth) He started his career as a seaman with the British Columbia Coast Steamship Service in 1941. He bravely went to war at 18 in the Canadian Merchant Marine, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He often spoke of having travelled around the world to meet his Marjorie, the love of his life, close to home on the docks in Steveston. They married in 1945 and Dad returned to BCCSS. He was a Master Mariner, retiring in 1984. They celebrated their retirement years spending time with their family and friends, enjoying summers at Mara Lake, and travelling to Maui each winter. He was predeceased by his wife Margie in 1998 and his dear friend Anna in 2009. Herb leaves a large and loving family; Margaret, Kathy (Don, Kelly, Jen and Sean), Patti (Gary), Bert, (Judy, David and Mark), Rob (Laurie, Cory, Madison and Jamie), and Kristi (Steve, Jane and Stephen). Dad loved a house filled with his family, friends and pets. He was a kind, generous and witty man who we will dearly miss and always remember with joy. A family gathering will be arranged to celebrate his life. No services or flowers by request and the family would encourage you to donate to a charity of your choice in celebration of Herb’s life.
